The Texas Attorney General opened a formal investigation against FIFA for the alleged fraudulent sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in several stadiums in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The investigation arises after multiple complaints from fans who reported excessive prices, duplicate tickets, and fake websites impersonating the official FIFA site for ticket sales.
According to the statement from the Texas Attorney General, his office has received hundreds of consumer complaints who paid high amounts for tickets that never arrived or turned out to be invalid when presented at the stadiums.
FIFA, for its part, issued a statement in which it assures to be “fully cooperating with authorities” and urged fans to purchase their tickets solely through official channels to avoid becoming victims of fraud.
The scandal occurs just weeks before the start of the most important tournament in world soccer, which promises to be one of the most watched in human history.
